Application
Barium Sulphate in Paints and Coatings
Barium sulphate powder is used in paints and coatings as a functional filler, which plays an important role in improving the mechanical properties of the coating film in many ways including surface hardness, abrasion resistance, impact resistance, heat resistance, weather resistance, etc.
As barium sulphate has high reflectivity in the wavelength range of 300-400 microns, it can protect the coating film from light ageing and is an effective white inorganic light stabilizer. Because of its low oil absorption and high filling capacity, it can reduce production costs. It can also replace 10%-25% of titanium dioxide in waterborne paints to increase film whiteness without the coverage rate dropping.
Barium sulphate can be used in various paints and coatings with different components like waterborne paints, oil-based paints, powder coatings, etc, or coatings with different functions like topcoats, intermediate coats, and primers.
Paints
Barium sulphate has high filling ability and can be used in all types of paints. Its small particle size and uniform distribution, large specific surface area and good flowability give barium sulphate low abrasiveness during processing. Barium sulphate used in automatic primer surface layers can achieve good uniformity and smoothness even with a high filling rate.
Topcoats
Compared to most traditional fillers, barium sulphate has the advantage of being chemically inert, for it’s insoluble in water, acids or other organic solvents, making it suitable for chemically resistant finishes. In addition, its excellent gloss and fine particle size make it possible to protect topcoats from long-term exposure. Barium sulphate used in topcoats can increase the surface hardness and color stability of the coating film.
Emulsion Paints
Emulsion paints using barium sulphate as filler is known as acid-resistant emulsion paint, and their coating film has good acid resistance even when exposed to the harsh environment. Barium sulphate has good dispersion, light retention, and flowability that can increase the chemical properties of emulsion paints. It is often used in high-gloss emulsion paints.
Wood Coatings
The low cohesion, low light dispersion and fine particle size of barium sulphate, as well as its chemical resistance and weather resistance, make it especially suitable for wood topcoats, varnish, spray paint, etc.
Powder Coatings
Used in powder coatings, barium sulphate can improve its gloss, fluidity and compatibility with various pigments. barium sulphate, with superior isolation capacity between the particles of white or colored pigments, keeps the particles of pigments at a certain distance from each other and improves pigment efficiency. It has low impurities, and high chemical inertness and doesn’t react chemically with organic substances in paints and coatings. Barium sulphate has excellent dispersion in all paints, which can prevent paint agglomerates, improve fluidity and enhance paint quality.
